Lot Description
[AMERICAN RED CROSS]. BARTON, Clara (1821-1912). Autograph letter signed ("Clara Barton"). Oxford, MS, 15 January 1906. [With:] WWI Red Cross poster, flag, and nurse's cap.
3 pages, 4 7/8 x 6 3/8 in., minor spotting.
Barton writes to (likely) her friend and supporter Roscoe Green Wells, in part, "Let us keep up good courage, and faith, The darkest day brightens...I look anxiously for the books, we have almost 500 envelopes addressed. Shall we require another print? if so, we must have it; and to be spoken of in time not to hasten the printer too much or he delay us. What do you think about it?...They are surely doing good work..."
Barton founded the National First Aid Association of America in 1905, after her retirement from the Red Cross. The organization was purposed to inform the public about first aid to the end that more people across the United States would be capable of administering lifesaving care in an emergency situation. Roscoe Green Wells held many positions in this organization, and he authored at least one book distributed by the association.

[With:] 19 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. (including hoist) machine-sewn worsted wool flag featuring a large red cross on a white field (few scattered holes, fraying, discoloration). Hoist features stamp reading "Cross."
