Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [EQUESTRIAN]. SCHREIBER & SONS, photographers. Album containing 75 portraits of identified race horses. Philadelphia, PA: ca 1870s. 

4to. (10 3/4 x 8 in.) 77 albumen photographs, each approx. 4 11/16  x 3 1/4 in. on cardstock mounts, housed in album 2 per page (toning to images and album pages, light wear to page edges and corners). Pebbled leather boards  (light surface wear). Adhered label to front pastedown identifies the album to "G.F. Hutchinson / Plattsburgh, N.Y."  

Most photographs with Schreiber & Sons credit printed on mount recto and/or in the negative (some including date); versos with Schreiber & Sons "Animal Portraits" imprint and inscribed identification. Album pages inscribed with names and, in many cases, additional information about each horse, including pedigree, notable attributes, etc. 

Specimens include "Belmont / By Alex's Abdallah / Trial Heat 2:28 / Dam by Mambrino Chief /  Sire of Nutwood 2:18 3/4 / Sold at public Auction for $22,000 and sire of 13 others in the 2:30 list or better / Sire of 'Belmont Forrest' / Sire of 'Wedgewood' 2:19, 'Viking,' 2:20 1/4, 'Dick Moore' 2:22 1/2, and 13 others with records in the 2:30 list or better." -- "The Great Campaigner 'Wedgewood' By 'Belmont' 692. 64. / Previous to 1879, which was his first season upon the Turf Wedgewood sired but 10 colts among them are 'Conway' pacer 2:18 3/4, 'Connaught' 2:24, 'Nugget' 2:26 3/4, 'Favonia' 2:27 3/4, 'Jesuit' 2:34, 'Ulva' 2:27 / Winner of every race in his class in the 'Grand Circuit' of 1880. A performance never equaled by any other Stallion / Record in A Fourth Heat 2:19 / The above record shows a percentage of speed never approached by any other sire." -- "Bourbon Boy / Dam By 'Mambrino' / By 'Strathmore.'" -- And 74 others.
