Lot Description
[AMERICAN INDIANS]. BAILEY, DIX, & MEAD, photographers. A group of 2 cabinet cards of Sitting Bull and Steps. Fort Randall, DT: 1882.
4 x 6 in. photographs on cardstock mounts (very fine condition, images and mounts curve upward). Each with copyright imprint to recto. Includes portrait of Sitting Bull holding Plains-style pipe, taken at Fort Randall during his internment before being transferred to Standing Rock (small spot to mount lower right). "Sitting Bull and True Autograph" printed with a brief biographical sketch to verso. -- Portrait of Steps, as identified on verso, with printed details about the subject and his connection to Sitting Bull: "A Nez Perce Indian, who escaped from his band, while surrounded in the bad lands of Nebraska, by Gen'l Miles, in 1878. He then joined Sitting Bull's band of Uncapapa Souix (sic) Indians in the British possessions and has followed their fortunes ever since. He lost his feet above the ankles, also his right hand by being frozen, having been caught in one of the severe snow storms, 21 years ago." -- Together, 2 cabinet cards.
