Lot Description
[WASHINGTON, George (1732-1799).] CHEESMAN, T., engraver. after John TRUMBULL, artist. A.C. de POGGI, publisher. General Washington.
Engraving, [1796], image 17 5/8 x 24 3/4 in. (visible sheet 19 1/8 x 28 1/8 in.), on wove paper, minor even toning, framed to 23 3/4 x 32 1/2 in., not examined out of frame.
After John Trumbull's 1792 Washington at Trenton, which the artist describes: "He holds in his right hand a reconnoitering glass, with which he is supposed to have been examining the strength of the hostile army, pouring into and occupying Trenton, which he has just abandoned at their approach...He is meditating how to avoid the apparently impending ruin, and to have just formed the plan...which led to the splendid success at Princeton, on the following morning." (Morgan-Fielding, Life Portraits of Washington, pp. 167-9). Published during Washington's second term, a fine lifetime engraving in a heroic pose. Baker 141.
