A political cartoon published during the 1852 presidential election showing the Whig candidate Winfield Scott, in uniform with a protuberant plume, riding upon the back of a man and being pulled by another, representing the intense division within the Whig party which split over the issue of slavery and the Compromise of 1850. Looking on are Millard Fillmore and Daniel Webster, both men who had been hopefuls for the Whig nomination during the 1852 convention
