29 x 42 1/8 in. printed broadside on yellow paper (minor soil on old creases, short marginal tears); framed to 34 3/8 x 47 1/2 in. (not examined out of frame). Signed in type by A.G. Packer and I.P. Gragg.
A large recruitment broadside for a unit that would become Company C of the 61st Massachusetts Infantry.
Albert G. Packer, of Roxbury was a 19 year old actor when he originally enlisted on 22 May 1861 into Company D of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry. During his initial service, he was promoted to corporal and wounded in action at Gettysburg. While recruiting for Company C, he was promoted to first lieutenant. He would see further promotion to captain on 15 January 1865.
Isaac Paul Gragg, also of Roxbury, also enlisted in May 1861 into Company D of the 1st Massachusetts. He too was promoted to corporal, to 2nd lieutenant of Co. C, 61st Massachusetts, to 1st lieutenant on 9 December 1864, and finally to captain by brevet on 9 April 1865.
During the relatively short service of the 61st, they were involved in action at Fort Mahone during the Petersburg Campaign.
