Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Albumen photograph of five soldiers from the 7th New York State Militia, 7th Company, at camp. Washington, DC, 1861.

2 2/12 x 3 3/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount, matted and housed in a folk art carved wooden frame, 7 1/2 x 10 in. (print and mount trimmed, unexamined outside frame, framed using acid free, archival materials under UV protection glass). An outdoor view of five soldiers seated before an open tent at camp near Washington, DC, in 1861. Three of the men are smoking pipes, one has a pipe in his hand, and one smokes a cigar. A table is visible inside the tent, with a large bottle and tin cups resting on it. Three muskets are stacked to the right of the tent. Four soldiers are identified in period ink on the mount below the image. Although difficult to discern, the names appear to include: "_. S. Bogart., V. Stautenburgh, Jesse Delane[y?], Chas. DeLamat[er?]"

An early war-date view of soldiers at leisure.

Property from the Civil War and Militaria Collection of George Sanders of Albuquerque, New Mexico
