Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR -- FORT SUMTER]. JAMES, W.E., photographer. Five wartime CDV views of Charleston including ruins of the Circular Church and Secession Hall. New York, ca 1865.
[With:] Permit for the Steamer Oceanus to travel to Charleston to witness the flag raising at Fort Sumter.
2 1/8 x 3 3/8 in., or smaller, CDVs on cardstock mounts (toning, light wear to edges and mounts). 4 images with ink captions and copyright statements on mount rectos, one with James' imprint and penciled caption on verso.
Inscribed captions include: "Gen. Hatch's headquarters. Charleston." -- "The Guard house Charleston." -- "Fort Sumter. Flag Raising." -- "Charleston" (a view of the home of Dr. Thomas Gadsden). -- "Secession Hall and St. Michaels Church Charleston SC 1865" (also showing the Circular Church).
[With:] DRAPER, Simeon (1806-1866). Partly printed document signed ("S. Draper") as Collector of the Port of New York. New York, 7 April 1865. Folio, 5 x 7 7/8 in. (light creasing, occasional spotting). Ft. Monroe handstamp to verso. Document permits "Mrs. C.T. Lewis to embark for Hilton Head, on board of the Steamer Oceanus Captain Wm S. Young" to witness the flag raising at Fort Sumter, in conformity with orders of Edwin Stanton.
[With:] [FRENCH, J. Clement and Edward CARY]. The Trip of the Steamer Oceanus to Fort Sumter and Charleston, S.C. Brooklyn, NY: "The Union" Steam Printing House, 1865. Sabin 25863.
Charlton T. Lewis served on the Executive Committee of the Sumter Club, and as such was invited (along with his wife) to witness the ceremonies at Fort Sumter by Edwin Stanton. The volume featured in this lot lists Mr. and Mrs. Lewis as passengers aboard the Oceanus (p. 163).
