REMY, Jules (1826-1893) and Julius BRENCHLEY (1816-1873). A Journey to Great-Salt-Lake City...With a Sketch of the History, Religion and Customs of the Mormons. London: W. Jeffs, 1861.

2 volumes, 8vo. Half-title and frontispiece portrait in each volume, 10 engraved plates, folding map. Original blue blind-stamped cloth, Mormon tabernacle in gilt on front covers, spines gilt-lettered (spines darkened, some wear to spine ends and extremities). Provenance: bookplates. 

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, preceded by the French language first edition of the previous year, recounting Remy and Brenchley’s trip from San Francisco to Salt Lake City in 1855, where they stayed for one month. The Frenchmen "were fascinated by the Mormons, and much of this book is devoted to the new American religion" (Wagner-Camp). The folding map traces the authors' route.
