During the 1852 Presidential campaign, Civil rights attorney Vincent Hallinan and African American newspaper publisher and civil rights activist Charlotta Bass were nominated as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the Progressive Party. Charlotta Bass was the first African American woman to run for vice president.
