Designed primarily to be used in the classroom, A Ticket to Freedom addressed civil rights issues of the late 1960s through a musical ballad composed by Josh White, Jr. (b. 1940). Son to bluesman and social activist Josh White (1914-1969), actor and musician Josh White, Jr. became popular on the college tour circuit at the time that A Ticket to Freedom was produced. In 1979, White headlined a concert special for PBS and later starred in a stage biography about his father. He was also nominated for a Grammy in 1987 for another tribute to his father entitled Jazz, Ballads, and Blues.
