Lot Description
[VOTING]. A group of 14 poll tax receipts. Jackson County, Mississippi, 1941-1963.
7 7/8 x 3 3/8 in. partly printed receipts (toned, occasional residue, minor creasing). Each completed in manuscript.
A grouping of Poll Tax receipts for Leona Hollingsworth (1898-1957) and her daughter Louise Hollingsworth (1922-2014), both of Moss Point, Jackson County, Mississippi.
For Leona, receipts are present for 1941 (Kreole voting precinct), 1949, 1950, 1953, 1954, and 1956. Louise has receipts from 1948, 1948 (noted as a "Supplement 1946"), 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954, and 1963. Several are stamped on the versos with indications and dates of voting. The receipts, beginning in 1951, begin to note the race and age of the taxpayer. Both the Hollingsworth women were white. Poll taxes were widely imposed across Southern states after the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment in order to disenfranchise African American voters as well as poor populations of all races.
