[PHOTOGRAPHY]. BASCH, Peter (1921-2004), photographer. Makeba. New York, ca 1970. 


11 x 14 in. silver gelatin photograph (edge and corner wear, including creasing to top right and bottom right corners). Verso with penciled identification, "Makeba," and ink stamp, "Peter Basch Studios Inc." 

Miriam Makeba, aka Mama Africa, was a singer, actress, and later United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. Her music was influenced by jazz, ragtime, hymns, and music indigenous to South Africa. 

Peter Basch was a magazine and glamour photographer whose career was prominent during the 1950s and 1960s. He was best known for his images of celebrities, artists, dancers, actors, and glamourous women in America and abroad. Basch's photographs appeared in high profile magazines including Life, Look, and Playboy.
