Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [MUSIC]. A group of 5 photographs of jazz musicians taken by African American photographer Charles "Chuck" STEWART (1927-2017). New York, ca 1960s.
Five (5) 8 x 10 in. silver gelatin photographs (light creasing at corners). Each stamped "Charles Stewart" to versos. Globe Photos and Photo Trends (Dizzy Gillespie) credit limitation labels affixed to versos. Ink inscriptions identifying subjects.
Subjects include Dizzie Gillespie (1917-1993), Louis Armstrong (1901-1971), and Roy Eldridge (1911-1989) playing the trumpet. Also includes two views of Lionel Hampton (1908-2002), one at the piano and the other playing vibraphone.
Chuck Stewart is best remembered for his photographs of jazz musicians which appeared on over 2,000 albums.
