Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Manuscript probate document reporting the court-ordered sale of the enslaved woman "Ellen" and her two children "Lucy Ann" and "Isabel." St. Louis, Missouri, 23 December 1846.
2pp, 8 1/8 x 10 1/2 in. (creasing, adhesive repair at folds, chipping at edges).
Estate administrator Franklin T. Utz reports "the sale of a Negroe woman named Ellen and her two children, one named Lucy Ann & the other Isabel all belonging to the estate of Nathaniel K. Sullivan deceased and to be sold to pay the debts of said estate." Utz further indicates that the sale was conducted "at the Court House door in the city of Saint Louis" after having advertised the said slaves for sale by hand bills. Enslaver Frederick Hyatt is identified as the "highest and last bidder at the price and sum of six hundred dollars."
