An Important Western Collection
Moroccan American photographer Lalla Essaydi's photographs deal with rebellion by Islamic women against their highly regulated, male dominated lives. Mostly confined to their homes, they are regarded as nothing more than decoration, suggests Essaydi and, with this in mind, she literally decorates them with Islamic texts in henna. This calligraphy is in itself a serious act of defiance, as it cannot be practiced by women; these texts give the women a voice with which they can speak to us as well as to one another, thereby undermining the isolation imposed upon them.
