Cheyenne Ledger Drawing
third quarter 19th century
plate #51, colorfully drawn battle scene, depicts a warrior with an elaborate shield in one hand and a bow in the other; he wears a single hawk feather and German silver hair drop and is further adorned with a German silver gorget and armbands; he rides his decorated pinto into a line of six soldiers, all firing and missing their target, as can be seen by the mass of bullets behind the warrior; an unknown signature glyph of a colored in horse points towards the warrior's head
