Lot Description
[WORLD WAR II]. USS New York sailor's album 1940-1945. [With:] Album from a trip to Asia, 1923.

Oblong quarto (8 3/4 x 13 1/2 in.) 220 x 345 mm. 206 photographs and prints, ranging in size from 1 3/8 x 1 3/4 in. to 8 x 10 1/8 in., mounted recto/verso in photo corners (some loose) to 8 3/8 x 12 3/4 in. album pages, with some mounted recto (toning, soiling, creasing, to prints, some having faded significantly, some with extreme soiling/residue; chipping/loss to edges of album pages). Sueded illustrated cloth with flap closure (half of both closure buttons missing, heavy wear/deterioration to spine and closure flap, soiling throughout). Album identified to Jack E. Brown, USN. Sparse brief captions on album pages and photographs identify some locations and fellow sailors' names. Photographs include personal images as well as views of naval vessels and aerial views. Some feature Brown and his fellow sailors during leisure time. Album also includes some paper log entries from Brown's time at sea, including tips from New York to Nova Scotia, Iceland, and Scotland, along with a loose Navy training certificate for the course "Gunners Mate 30," and 25 loose postcards feature various aircraft, aircraft carriers, and other Navy vessels. The New York served as a convoy escort for ships to Iceland and the UK at the beginning of World War II.

[With:] Oblong quarto (10 1/4 x 12 3/4 in.) 260 x 325 mm. 643 photographs, most 2 1/8 x 3 1/4 in. snapshots, most mounted recto/verso in photo corners (some loose) on 12 1/2 x 9 7/8 in. album pages (toning to images; heavy chipping to album pages, some have come fully separated from binding). Textured cloth (wear to extremities). Album identified by modern inscription on accompanying loose leaf paper to Charles Beard, from a diplomatic mission to Asia in the 1920s. Most images numbered in pencil in margins, featuring landscape, street, and waterfront views from around Japan. First photograph captioned in pencil "w. Beard 1923." Some pages are inscribed with specific city names including Nara and Nikko, Japan, though many are simply inscribed with country names, including Japan, Formosa, China, and Korea.
