Lot Description
[GENERAL AMERICANA]. Pencil sketch of Mississippi River scene, 1860.
10 7/8 x 6 13/16 in. pencil sketch on 13 3/4 x 10 in. sheet (significant spotting and surface soiling throughout, with some abrasions to paper and wear including creasing and small chips to edges and corners). Signed lower left, "S[?] Eavey," dated lower right, "March 1860," and titled central margin, "The Mississippi Raft."
The drawing appears to be after an engraving published in Harper's Story Books by Jacob Abbott, 1854.
Central to the illustration is a large log raft carrying 7 individuals, 6 of whom hold long poles to steer the vessel. The figure not engaged in this pursuit stands next to what appears to be a small fire with smoke billowing up above. A steamboat cruises in the background to the right.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
