Lot Description
Autograph document signed ("J. Penn") by North Carolina Founding Father John Penn. 1783.

PENN, John (1741-1788). Autograph document signed ("J. Penn") by North Carolina politician John Penn who signed the Declaration of Independence and served as a member of the Continental Congress. State of North Carolina, 1783.

6 x 3 3/4 in. manuscript receipt with summary of charges incurred during a trial (document appears to be missing portion as evidenced by incomplete text on recto, creasing, toning). Penn signs as "Lawyer" including charges for the sheriff serving writs and attending the jury.

Following the Revolutionary War, Penn practiced law until his death in 1788. A rare signature from this Founding Father who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Article of Confederation as a delegate from North Carolina.
