Lot Description
[POSTCARDS]. A group of 93 RPPCs & photographs of Native American subjects.
The lot includes the following: approx. 78 real photo postcards, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in., or smaller, some unused, and 15 silver gelatin photographs, 3 1/2 x 5 3/4 in., or smaller, featuring Native American subjects, including studio portraits, informal outdoor views, ceremonies, and dwellings. Many of the scenes are identified in the negative.
Highlighted titles/scenes include: Spanish speaking boys in Albuquerque, April 1919 (not RPPC). -- A Moqui Indian Village. -- Basket makers. -- A Sioux scout, by Fiske. -- Chief Spotted Weasel, Dubois, WY. -- "Susan Jackson" Indian Basket Weaver. -- Totem poles at Alert Bay. -- Chief Mastow and his Dwellings, Mackinaw, MI. -- Autographed RPPC of Richard Sanderville of the Blackfoot people standing in front of a tipi. He signed tourist postcards in Glacier National Park as Chief Bull. The inscription includes ink drawings of a buffalo head and profile of man wearing a feather bonnet. -- Navajo Indian children herders tending their flock near Gallup, New Mexico. -- Thunder Mountain from Zuni Housetops. -- Rosebud Indian War Dancers, Souvenir of Round-Up, by O'Neill Photo Co. -- Sitting Bull's Cabin, Fort Yates, ND, after print made by Fiske. -- Spruce Tree House, Mesa Verde Ruins, CO. -- Mid-Week Market Scene, Polson-Flathead Reservation, MT. -- Indian Huts on State Game Refuge near Hinckley, MN. -- John Smith, or Ka-Be-Nah-Gwey-Wence, a Chippewa man from Cass Lake, MN.
Together, approx. 93 real photo postcards and photographs. Condition generally good to very good. Some with edge and corner wear/loss, toning, and album residue to verso.
[With:] 6 printed postcards of Apache, Zuni, and Mohave subjects copyrighted by Edward S. Curtis, 4 of which include written messages. Some corner and edge wear to postcards.
