This photograph was originally a gift from Cartier-Bresson to its former owner. The two met during a drive, along with George Miles, to Carson McCullers’ Nyack home where Bresson took this double portrait. McCullers was best known for her books The Heart is A Lonely Hunter (1940) and The Member of the Wedding (1946); Davis was the fiction and features editor at Harper’s Bazaar and Mademoiselle from the 1930s to the 1950s.
