This dress was first shown the summer before 9/11 in 2001, shortly thereafter, Catherine Malandrino’s American flag-printed dress became a symbol of American patriotism. A sleeveless version of the dress made its red-carpet debut on Halle Berry September 1, 2001. The dress later that year was worn by Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone and Madonna as a symbol of American pride after the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center. The dress was later relaunched to commemorate the election of President Barack Obama. Following the election Meryl Streep was seen wearing the printed chiffon dress as was Kelly Rippa on Live With Regis and Kelly. In 2009 a version of the now iconic dress was shown in the exhibit “Fashion and Politics” at FIT. A duplicate of this dress is held in the Costume Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
