Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 7 items associated with James M. Barnard, 24th and 44th Massachusetts Infantry, highlighted by war-date sketches by Barnard, an autographed CDV, and a regimental history of the 24th Massachusetts Infantry.

Boston, MA, resident James M. Barnard enlisted on 12 September 1861 as a 2nd lieutenant and was commissioned into Company G, 24th Massachusetts Infantry. Barnard was promoted to 1st lieutenant 6 February 1864, then captain 3 September 1864. During his time  with the 24th MA, the regiment engaged in a number of important battles, most notably Roanoke Island, New Bern, Tranter's Creek, Rawle's Mill, Whitehall, Drewry's Bluff, Deep Bottom, and Petersburg. Barnard mustered out on 31 October 1864 and lived in Savannah, GA, after the war. 

The lot contains 5 drawings rendered in pencil by Barnard, taken from the sketchbook he owned while stationed in the Carolinas in 1862. Each drawing measures 7 x 5 3/8 in. and is captioned in pencil in the lower margin (toning, occasional spotting, some chipping to edges). Captions include: "Creek near Camp of the 44th at Newbern - To be painted not drawn" (12/1862 - 4/1863). -- "A house used for Quarters by Officers of the 24th Mass. at Washington, NC" (Summer 1862). -- "View across Pamlico River, Washington, NC" (Summer 1862). -- "US Gun Boat Louisiana, Washington, NC" (1862). -- "Camp of 24th Mass. Seabrook Is. SC" (3/1863 - 6/1863). 

[With:] CDV, shoulder-length portrait of James M. Barnard, autographed on verso, "Yours - Jas. M. Barnard, Jr." Boston, MA: Black & Case, ca 1860s (toning, some fading to print). -- ROE, Alfred S. The Twenty-Fourth Regiment. Massachusetts Volunteers 1861-1866. "New England Guard Regiment." Worcester, MA: Twenty-Fourth Veteran Association, 1907 (some shelfwear, light staining to free front end papers). Barnard contributed a number of his war-date sketches to this regimental history of the 24th Massachusetts.
