Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Group of artifacts related to Alexander White, 82nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, including escutcheon, CDV portrait, and flag remnants.
15 1/2 x 25 1/4 in. (sight) printed escutcheon featuring the service record of Alexander White of the 82nd Pennsylvania Volunteers at center, with a CDV near bottom showing Alexander White in uniform, holding a rifle with bayonet. Flag fragments, including stars, letters, and fringe, are pinned on both sides of the escutcheon, which is housed under glass in a 20 x 30 in. frame (expected wear, unexamined outside frame).
A modern typed label taped to the cover glass describes the items enclosed as follows, "These pieces of flag are from the Penna. state flag, which was carried in the Civil War. This photo of Alexander White, was taken in Wheeling, W. Va., Jun. 1863. Age 20 years."
Alexander White, a resident of Philadelphia, PA, enlisted on 23 July 1861 as a private and mustered into Co. D, 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was taken prisoner while on a foraging expedition near Stafford Court House, VA, January 1863, and released in June 1863. White mustered out of service 16 September 1864. The 82nd Pennsylvania was engaged in a number significant battles during the war, including 1st Bull Run, the Peninsular campaign, Fair Oaks, Charles City crossroads, Marvin Hill, Chantilly, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Funkstown, Rappahannock Station, Cold Harbor, Ft Stevens, Summit Point, Sheridan's valley campaign, and Sailors Creek. The 82nd PA was also at the extreme front when Lee surrendered.
