[FLAGS] -- [CIVIL WAR]. 34-star American flag. Ca 1861-1863.
94 x 150 in. machine-sewn wool flag with 34 hand-sewn, single-appliquéd cotton stars configured in 7/7/7/7/6 horizontal rows (some holes and few areas of separation throughout, few small sections reinforced with additional fabric, few minor stains). Hoist is canvas, with 3 metal grommets. The initials "TBS" are embroidered on the hoist.
The 34th star represents Kansas, which was admitted to the Union in January 1861 and was the last state admitted before the outbreak of the Civil War.
