Lot Description
CUSTER, George Armstrong (1839-1876). Autograph endorsement signed ("G.A. Custer"), as Brevet Major General, U.S.A. [September 1866].
Post-war endorsement signed by Custer on verso of letter written by William Burnell to the Secretary of the Interior, the Hon. O.H. Browning. Burnell requests a promotion from his position of watchman in the Interior Department to that of clerk, noting that he served for the duration of the war under Generals including Sheridan and Custer. Browning closes by calling attention to the accompanying endorsements [only Custer's accompanies the letter].
Custer's handwritten endorsement on verso of bifolium letter reads, in full: "Believing Mr.Burnell to be both worthy and capable I commend him to the favourable consideration of the Hon Secretary of the Interior OH Browning and recommend him for promotion."
Condition of letter generally good, with expected folds and toning. Adhesive on verso, partially overlaying top line of Custer's endorsement.
