Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Cabinet card of William Sylvanus Starring, author of Lahcotah: Dictionary of the Sioux Language.
3 7/8 x 5 3/4 in. cabinet photograph on thin cardstock mount (light toning, minor spotting, and some edge wear to print; mount with light toning, soiling, and possible clipping to edges and corners). Modern pencil identification to verso. Starring is featured in an oval half portrait as a first lieutenant.

[With:] 3 1/2 x 1 3/4 in. calling card reading "William S. Starring. / Captain of Ordnance, U.S. Army."

William Sylvanus Starring (1841-1889) attended West Point from 1860-1865, emerging to join the US Army in operations out west, specifically at Forts Lyon, Laramie, Kearny, and Sanders between 1865 and 1869. Given his time in the Dakota Territory, he was able to interact and study with the Sioux. He co-authored a bi-lingual dictionary of the Sioux language, which became the first book published in the the state of Wyoming in 1866, and for which Starring is best known.
