Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Manuscript bill of sale for two enslaved individuals, Dine and Cato. New Jersey, 12 April 1802.
1 page, 8 1/2 x 13 3/8 in., separations along old folds, chipping and creasing to edges. Undersigned. Docketed to verso.
A manuscript bill of sale for "one negro girl named Dine aged about thirteen years and one negro boy named Cato aged about seven years old." The two enslaved individuals were sold by Samuel Shotwell of Bernards Township in Somerset County, New Jersey to Abraham Cooper of Chester Township in Morris County, New Jersey for one hundred [New Jersey] pounds. Dine and Cuff are described as being "slaves for life."
New Jersey was the last northern state to pass a law begining the process of gradual emancipation of enslaved persons within its borders in 1804.
The Abraham Cooper referred to in this bill of sale is likely Abraham Cooper (1762-1818), father of General Nathan A. Cooper (1802-1879). Abraham inherited portions of his father's plantation and bequeathed a large estate to his son, Nathan, upon his death in 1818.
