George Jackson (1941-1971) was an African American activist, author, member of the Black Panther Party, and co-founder of the prison gang known as the Black Guerrilla Family. In 1970, he gained national attention as one of the three "Soledad Brothers" charged with the murder of correctional officer John Vincent Mills in the aftermath of a prison fight. During an escape attempt from San Quentin in 1971, Jackson was killed by prison guards. The photograph offered here was taken while Jackson was at San Quentin Prison.
Ruth-Marion Baruch's body of work includes a series of photographs documenting the Black Panther Party, taken in collaboration with her husband, photographer Pirkle Jones, from July to October 1968.
