Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Mounted albumen photograph of African American children playing a game. Ca 1860s.
3 5/16 x 3 5/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (light toning, spotting, and soiling to print; mount with repaired separation to lower right corner, and soiling throughout). Uncredited. Possibly one half of a stereoview, though seemingly mounted as a singular image.
A large group of African American children enjoy outdoor time in front of what appears to be a school house. The image centers on two older boys throwing a ball to one another. Three white teachers are visible in the door of the schoolhouse. One of the principals wears a Union kepi, suggesting a Civil War or immediate post war time frame.
Condition Report
The physical condition of lots in our auctions can vary due to
age, normal wear and tear, previous damage, and
restoration/repair. All lots are sold "AS IS," in the condition
they are in at the time of the auction, and we and the seller make
no representation or warranty and assume no liability of any kind
