Lot Description
[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. Daily Illinois State Register. Vol. 14, No. 22. Springfield, IL: Charles H. Lanphier, 26 January 1861. News regarding politics and the abolition of slavery published in President-elect Lincoln's hometown newspaper.

4pp., folio, 16 1/4 x 23 1/2 in. Disbound (partially separated at central fold, light chipping, short tears, creasing, light staining to margins).

Printed in Abraham Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, IL, the newspaper contains page 2 coverage on politics, with a focus on President-elect Lincoln and the time leading up his inauguration in Washington, DC. The editorial article provides excerpts from some of Lincoln's previous speeches, including his famous declaration that “…the Union could not endure, permanently, part slave and part free…”

Page 2 also references an incident involving the John Brownites at Boston, who were snubbed by British Lord Brougham after inviting him to attend a convention discussing the abolition of slavery.
