Lot Description
[POLITICS]. A group of 4 letters signed by politicians and reformers, incl. Robert Todd LINCOLN, Henry Ward BEECHER, Roscoe CONKLING, and Whitelaw REID. 

LINCOLN, Robert Todd (1843-1926), eldest son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, lawyer, military officer, businessman, and politician. Autograph letter signed ("Robert T. Lincoln"), to James Gospill (1823-1884). Chicago, IL, 7 February 1881. 2 pages, 4 5/8 x 7 1/8 in., creased at folds, with partial separations, with original envelope addressed in Lincoln's hand. Lincoln writes to James Gopsill, former Mayor of Jersey City, declining his invitation to an event held by the Lincoln Club.

[With:] BEECHER, Henry Ward (1813-1887), clergyman, author, abolitionist, reformer. Autograph letter signed ("Henry Ward Beecher"), to James Gospill (1823-1884). Brooklyn, NY, 9 February 1881. 1 page, 4 7/8 x 8 in., on "Brooklyn, NY" letterhead, creased at folds, toning and few stains to verso. Beecher writes to Gopsill, declining his invitation to an event held by the Lincoln Club.

[With:] CONKLING, Roscoe (1829-1888), Republican politician who represented New York in the US House of Representatives and US Senate, tied to James A. Garfield. Autograph letter signed ("Roscoe Conkling"), addressed to James Gopsill (1823-1884). Washington, DC, 7 February 1881. 1 page, 5 x 8 in., on "Senate Chamber, Washington" letterhead, creased at folds, with partial separations, with original envelope. Conkling writes to Gopsill, declining his invitation to an event held by the Lincoln Club.

[Also with:] REID, Whitelaw (1837-1912), New York Tribune owner and editor, US Ambassador to the United Kingdom and France. Letter signed ("Whitelaw Reid"), addressed to James Gopsill (1823-1884). 1 page, 6 x 9 1/4 in., on "New-York Tribune" letterhead, creased at folds with partial separations, adhesive repair to separation near top portion of letter. Reid writes to Gopsill, declining his invitation to an event held by the Lincoln Club.
