Rear Admiral Robert Edwin Peary, Sr. (1856-1920) was an American naval officer known best for his many expeditions to the Arctic during the late 19th-early 20th centuries, including an expedition in which he claimed to have reached the North Pole. After achieving "farthest north" records in previous journeys, Peary set out on a last expedition to the Arctic in July of 1908 with the hopes of reaching the North Pole. Together with American Matthew Henson, and four Inuit men, Peary claimed to have established "Camp Jesup" within 5 miles of the Pole on 6 April 1909.
