Lot Description
CHOATE, John N. (1848-1902), photographer. Cabinet card featuring Cheyenne Chiefs Man-on-the-Cloud and Mad Wolf. Carlisle, PA, ca 1880.

Approx. 3 7/8 x 5 7/8 in. cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (toning, light creasing to lower left and upper right corners, light soiling); framed to 11 5/8 x 14 in. (not examined out of frame). Title list and Choate credit to cabinet card verso, with "No. 63 Man-on-the-Cloud and Mad Wolf, Cheyenne" underlined (photograph of verso attached to back of frame). Man-on-the-Cloud is featured holding a bow and arrow. 

John N. Choate (1848-1902) began a long photographic career at Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded. According to newspaper reports, Chiefs Man-on-the-Cloud and Mad Wolf visited the school in September of 1880.
