Lot Description
[CHOATE, John N. (1848-1902), photographer]. Two cabinet cards featuring Arapaho Chief Little Raven with daughter Anna, and Cheyenne warrior Bobtail Horse with son Joseph. [Carlisle, PA], ca 1880.

Approx. 3 7/8 x 5 7/8 in. cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (toning and soiling throughout; mount with edge/corner wear and tape affixed to upper and lower edges); framed to 12 5/8 x 15 3/4 in. (not examined out of frame). Arapaho Chief Little Raven sits next to his standing daughter, Anna, who rests her hands on his shoulder. --  Approx. 3 7/8 x 5 3/4 in. cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (toning to print; mount with light soiling and edge/corner wear); framed to 11 9/16 x 13 13/16 in. (not examined out of frame). Cheyenne warrior Bobtail Horse wears moccasins and a blanket, and holds a pipe in his lap with both hands, while his son Joseph sits on a prop next to him, wearing his school uniform. -- Together, 2 cabinet cards by Choate featuring prominent Native American leaders with their children at the Carlisle's Indian School.

Arapaho Chief Little Raven was a powerful orator, known for peace negotiations among the Southern Arapaho, Plains Apaches, and other tribes. His daughter, Anna Raven, was a student at the Carlisle school.

Northern Cheyenne warrior Bobtail Horse had fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn, defending a ford from approaching soldiers in Custer's immediate command. He later enlisted as a scout under General Nelson Miles.

John N. Choate (1848-1902) began a long photographic career at Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded.
