Lot Description
CHOATE, John N. (1848-1902), photographer. 3 cabinet cards featuring female students at Carlisle Indian School. Carlisle, PA, ca 1880s.
4 x 5 3/4 in. cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (toning, spotting, and light soiling throughout, with light wear to mount edges and corners); framed to 11 5/8 x 13 7/8 in. (not examined out of frame). Choate's Carlisle, PA imprint on mount recto. Vignetted portrait of 3 unidentified female students wearing school uniforms.

[With:] Full studio portrait of a group of 4 identified young female students wearing school-issued print dresses.  Choate's imprint and list of series captions to verso, with "56. Justine La Framboise, Nancy Renville, Cheyenne Lucy and Anna Laura," underlined. -- Vignetted bust portrait of an unidentified female student wearing school uniform with beaded cross necklace. Choate's Carlisle, PA imprint on verso. -- Together, 2 cabinet cards. Each 4 x 6 in., or smaller, on cardstock mounts. Toning and light soiling/spotting throughout, with light wear to mount edges and corners.

John N. Choate (1848-1902) began a long photographic career at Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded.

Sioux student Justine La Framboise entered the Carlisle Indian School in November of 1879 and departed in June of 1882. Multiple photographs of her were taken during her time at the institution.
