Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. HILEMAN, Tomar J. (1882-1945), photographer. Turtle. [Kalispell, Montana, ca 1911]. Photograph originally displayed at Hileman's studio.
13 13/16 x 16 3/4 in. silver gelatin print on cardstock mount (each corner with pinholes/separation, toning to margins; mount with loss to upper right corner, minor creasing, light dampstaining). Image with Hileman blindstamp to lower right corner. Numbered "9572" and subject identified "Turtle" on mount recto and verso. Provenance: Acquired in 1990 from the widow of Blackfoot Chief Big Spring, to whom Hileman gave the photograph (consignor note).

Consignor relates that Chief Big Spring was given several photographs when Hileman closed his studio ca 1925. Apparently the photograph featured here was one of many displayed on the walls of Hileman's Kalispell, MT studio so that interested parties could order copies using the numbers and names boldly displayed on the gray mounts.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition Report

The physical condition of lots in our auctions can vary due to age, normal wear and tear, previous damage, and restoration/repair. All lots are sold "AS IS," in the condition they are in at the time of the auction, and we and the seller make no representation or warranty and assume no liability of any kind as to a lot's condition. Any reference to condition in a catalogue description or a condition report shall not amount to a full accounting of condition. Condition reports prepared by Hindman staff are provided as a convenience and may be requested from the Department prior to bidding.
