John Johnston (1775-1861) served for many years as an Indian Agent for the government in Indiana and Ohio. His career with Native Americans began as a wagoner for General Anthony Wayne's Legion of the United States. He was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1802 as Indian Agent at Fort Wayne. By 1809, he was in charge of two Indian Agencies. He primarily managed trade so that Indians would not seek trade with the British.
