[WESTERN AMERICANA]. GRABILL, John C.H. (1849-1903), photographer. Freighting in "The Black Hills." Mrs. Canuteson of Rapid City, Dak. has been freighting with oxen to Rapid City, Sturgis and Deadwood for many years. [South Dakota], 1887.
9 x 6 1/2 in. photograph on cardstock mount (rich tonality, very good condition overall; light corner wear to mount). Captioned, numbered 478, and copyrighted by Grabill in the negative. Applied paper label to verso provides additional information regarding Mrs. Canuteson, "familiarly known as 'the bullwhackeress' in the operation of cutting an ox in two with a whip."
