Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA]. Studio photograph showing a group of identified advance scouts working for the Union Pacific Railroad. Ca 1867.
3 3/4 x 4 7/8 in. albumen photograph on 5 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. thin cardstock mount (print retains rich tonality; creasing and some residue to mount). Mount verso with 5-cent internal revenue stamp and penciled identification of each subject.
The identification states, in part, "First men to start road. / Sitting - Chas. F. Wallace - Conductor, Stephen Sharp - Trackman, George Bruce - Civil Eng[ineer]. / Standing - Chas. Smith, Jno. Cruse - Tele[phone] Op[erator." With additional notation in lower margin, "Came from Owego, New York, with Sam'l. Hallett and Jno. C. Fremont." The print is accompanied by an album page upon which it was previously mounted, with typed label identifying the subjects as advance scouts for the Union Pacific.
