Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA - MINING]. SHAW, E.T. & JOHNSON, John, photographers. Sixth plate daguerreotype of a gold miner with shovel in hand. San Francisco, CA, ca 1852.
Sixth plate daguerreotype. (Very good condition overall, few minor spots and scratches on plate, wipe marks; unsealed.) Housed in a separated pressed leather case (fully split at spine, light surface wear). Velvet pad marked "Shaw & Johnson, Artists, San Francisco."
The unidentified sitter poses with his hand resting on the handle of a shovel. He wears a typical blouse and sports a belt with a gold-highlighted two-piece buckle favored by California gold seekers.
Shaw and Johnson operated the short-lived “Eureka Daguerreian Rooms” at 197 Montgomery Street for a mere three months between January and March, 1852, before their partnership dissolved.
A rare image.
