Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 5 tintypes and CDVs of Rhode Island soldiers, highlighted by identified Bull Run casualty, John S. Slocum, 2nd RI Infantry.
CDV, standing view of John S. Slocum, 2nd Rhode Island Infantry, KIA Bull Run 7/21/1861. Uncredited (small chip to lower right edge of print, otherwise very fine condition). -- CDV, vignetted view of William Sprague, the 27th Governor of Rhode Island who served during the Civil War. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony (toning, soiling to print; lower right corner loss to mount). Sprague fought at the First Battle of Bull Run as a volunteer and was offered a commission as a Brigadier General of Volunteers for his service. However, Sprague declined the appointment. From the governorship, he was elected to the US Senate in 1863 and served in that body until 1875. -- CDV of unidentified soldier. Boston, MA, and Newport, RI: Black & Case, 1865. Three cent revenue stamp dated 22 July 1865 on verso.
[With:] 2 1/2 x 4 1/8 in. tintype of an armed Union private wearing a Rhode Island tunic, standing before a camp backdrop (image a bit dark). -- 2 1/8 x 3 1/2 in. tintype housed under a paper mat showing a 10th Rhode Island Burnside Zouave musician holding his horn on his knee. Providence, RI: A.E. Alden (light creases throughout plate, clarity and contrast very good). Alden's studio imprint on paper label affixed to back of image.
Together, 5 photographs.
