Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. [RUSSELL, Andrew J. (1830-1902), photographer.] [Union soldiers entrenched along the west bank of the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, VA.] Ca 1862-63.
7 7/8 x 5 5/8 in. albumen photograph on 12 1/8 x 10 1/2 in. cardstock mount (some spotting and a few abrasions affecting surface of print; spotting and edge/corner wear to mount; verso with toned transparent tape repair). Uncredited, though widely attributed to Andrew J. Russell. Lone notation "13" to verso. Recently discovered in Illinois, and purportedly descended in Andrew J. Russell's family.
A large group of sitting and standing soldiers, arms, and artillery populate a trench while a pair of officers stand above, looking afield.
