Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 3 albumen photographs, highlighted by views of possible casualties near Devil's Den, Gettysburg.
6 x 8 in., or smaller, albumen photographs on cardstock mounts (some chipping, separations/splits to mounts extending into images in some cases, some repaired with transparent tape, toning, staining, soiling throughout). Uncredited, though possibly by Hanover, PA photographer Peter Weaver ca November 1863. Pencil inscription to verso of second image reads, "opsit [sic] Round top & near what is cald [sic] the Devils Den."
The pair of images of "casualties" are thought to depict Union soldiers posing as though they are dead, scattered among the rocks near Devil's Den, with Doctors Lyford and Chamberlain inspecting the scene. The third image shows a group of civilians posed on the battlefield.
Property from the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents
