Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. BRADY, Mathew, photog. CDV of officers, incl. USMC Paymaster Major Wm. RUSSELL.
New York, n.d. 2 1/8 x 3 1/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning, ink spot, and large tear to print; some soiling and clipped corners to mount). Brady's imprint on mount recto and verso. 17 men, most wearing military uniforms, pose variously (sitting, standing, lying horizontally) outdoors. Sitting on the ground at the bottom right appears to be Major William Russell, sporting his characteristic slanted mustache and wearing a double-breasted frock coat and boots.
William Worthington Russell (1821-1862) was notably involved in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry in October of 1859. When Brown declined J.E.B. Stuart's demand for surrender, Stuart signaled for his men to force entry into the engine house Brown and his hostages were occupying. First Lieutenant Israel Greene and Major Russell were the first to enter through the breached doorway, and Brown was apprehended shortly thereafter.
