Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Confederate autographs, incl. Generals BEAUREGARD & MAGRUDER.
The lot is comprised of the following:
BEAUREGARD, P.G.T. (1818-1893). Stamped Confederate postal cover postmarked Charleston, tied to Scott #12 Jefferson Davis stamp. Addressed to Calhoun Hills, SC, and Beauregard notes at top right, "From Gen'l. Beauregard," with his flourish below. Stamp would have been issued in 1863, and Beauregard returned to Charleston from the Western Campaign in 1863 to defend Charleston (cover complete with loss to paper at top edge not affecting notation).
[With:] MAGRUDER, John B. (1807-1871). Partial imprinted requisition signed ("J. Bankhead Magruder") as Bt. Lt. Col. USA, Capt. 1st Arty.
[With:] QUARLES, W.A. (1825-1893). Autograph letter signed ("W.A. Quarles") as Colonel. Clarksville, [TN], 29 [November or December 1861]. Quarles writes about a telegram from General Hardee to General Clark regarding relieving Dr. Lyon of his duties at the hospital at Clarksville, TN. At this time, Quarles was a colonel and post commander under General Clark. Dr. William Lyle was known as "Big Medicine." He was appointed surgeon in May 1861 from Mississippi and in September 1862 in the PACS, assigned to Corinth. He was present at Shiloh and made a report of the casualties of the 1st Corps, Army of Mississippi. He was later appointed Inspector of Hospitals of General Johnston's Command.
[With:] GARLAND, William H., Confederate Colonel, 14th Louisiana Cavalry. 4 signed items, including: 3 clipped signatures. -- Signature on verso of City of New Orleans pre-war Municipal bond coupon as Treasurer of the 2nd Municipality.
[With:] SOULE, Pierre (1801-1870). Clipped signature. -- CHEW, R.P. Confederate Lieutenant Colonel. Clipped signature. Chew raised a battery of horse artillery, which eventually became part of the famous Laurel Brigade under Stonewall Jackson. -- HILLIARD, Henry, Confederate Colonel. Clipped signature. -- SEDDON, James A. (1815-1880), Confederate Secretary of War. Clipped signature signed by Seddon as Secretary of War. -- HASKELL, A.C., Confederate Colonel, 1st South Carolina Regiment. ALS, Columbia, SC, 26 May 1871, dealing with a mortgage deemed good in Savannah. Haskell was injured four times during the war at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, and Darbytown Road. He was appointed by General Lee to surrender the Confederate cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia at the Appomattox Court House on 12 April 1865. -- GRIFFIN, Adam. Pre-war clipped signature on reverse of partly printed document from New Orleans, dated 1856.
Together, 13 signed items. Condition generally good, with expected wear.
