Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - NAVY]. A group of 3 letters signed by Gideon Welles, comprising:

WELLES, Gideon. Ls, 1 p., 4to, from Welles to General Benjamin Butler in Boston, 21 Feb. 1862, marked “Per Telegraph” with notations accordingly: “Do you think you will need Thos. Chubb now held at Fort Monroe?  [Confederate] General Huger makes a proposition for his exchange.”

WELLES, Gideon.  Ls, 1 p., 4to, 5 June 1861, to F. S. CORKRAN, Naval Officer, Baltimore. In response to Corkran’s inquiry, Wells states that “the Rendezvous at Baltimore has been closed since the 22nd of April, and all enlistments have been made onboard the Alleghany at Annapolis.  ¶ The Department has nothing whatever to do with Lutz, and if he furnishes men for enlistment, he does so on his own responsibility.”

WELLES, Gideon. Ls, 1 p., 4to, 30 June 1865, to McKean BUCHANAN, Paymaster, U.S.R.S. OHIO, Boston.  The Navy Department wants to know “how many writers are now employed on the Ohio.”  Note lower left corner: “Forwarded, Feb. 1,” signed S.[ilas] H.[orton] Strigham, Commandant.”  Stringham commanded the Atlantic Blockading Squadron at the beginning of the war, but his active duty did not last long.  He headed the Boston Navy Yard 1864 – 1866, and served as Port Admiral of New York 1870.”

[With:] LANE, James Henry.
ALs, ½ p., 4to, from Crawfordsville, IN, 8 October 1862, to WELLES, recommending “my friend” Charles H. Conner “for the appointment of the Purser of the Gun boat now building at New Albany Indiana.  A rabid Abolitionist, he served during the war as both a sitting U. S. Senator (KS) and a Brig. General.  He committed suicide as a sitting Senator in 1866.
