Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] Union Circular requesting captured flags be returned to Corps Commander, 14 April 1865.
7 13/16 x 9 7/8 in., creased, with some wear and tearing to left and upper edges. Docketed verso. Signed by Assistant A. A. G. Charles H. Woodman.
By command of corps commander, Bvt. Major General Frank Wheaton, Head Quarters, 1st Division, 6th Corps, this circular, issued days after Robert E. Lee's surrender, requests that all captured flags be "forwarded in order that a correct report may be made to Army Head quarters. In instances where it is known that parties have flags and are unwilling to give them up special application will be made requesting their return to the captors in place of medals, or other rewards. For the credit of the Corps, all officers who are cognizant of cases such as last mentioned, should use their power and influence to recover the flags, let the disposition of them by the War Department be what it may."
