Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. ZANGAKI, photog. Photograph of large steam dredge, Derocheuse. Ca 1880s-90s.

10 3/4 x 8 3/8 in. photograph mounted to 11 7/8 x 10 in. (toning and a few abrasions, spotting to print; significant spotting to mount). Titled "Drague 'Deroheuse No. 14" and credited to Zangaki in the negative. Vero bears erroneous pencil identification of subject. The dredge is pictured here likely in the Suez Canal, where it was built in 1887 at the Lobnitz & Co. shipyard. Several men can be seen posing on the deck and atop the high platform.

The Zangaki brothers (C. and G. Zangaki) photographed Ottoman Europe from the 1860s to the 1890s, capturing images of ancient architecture and street scenes, as well as works on the Suez Canal. They were some of the first commercial photographers to produce and sell large format images of Egypt at that time.
